Deep Sea Fishing Quepos
Dedicated deep-sea fishing targeting billfish and pelagics at depth.
8 hours offshore on the Pacific — access the best sailfish, tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi grounds off the Costa Rica coast.
The full-day fishing charter from Quepos is the definitive way to experience one of the world's premier sportfishing destinations. With 8 hours on the water and an experienced Pacific captain at the helm, you access offshore grounds 20–40 miles from shore where the blue water holds extraordinary concentrations of Pacific sailfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi.
Departing the Quepos Marina before dawn, the boat reaches the first productive grounds as the sun rises over the Costa Rican coastline — a stunning sight that sets the tone for a remarkable day. The captain reads the water constantly: tracking current edges on the sonar, watching for bird activity above bait schools, and monitoring fleet radio for reports from other boats. This intelligence — combined with decades of personal experience — is what puts you on fish.
Pacific sailfish are the signature species of Quepos offshore fishing. These spectacular billfish — reaching 8–9 feet in length and leaping 10 times their body length from the water on the strike — are the stuff of angling legend. On the best days, the captain finds large aggregations of sailfish corralling baitfish balls at the surface — a wildlife spectacle of extraordinary intensity that happens to be accompanied by exceptional fishing.
When the sailfish aren't on, the full-day format allows the captain to find the yellowfin tuna schools — 30–100lb fish that school in the current breaks and provide some of the most physically demanding and rewarding fishing in the ocean. Wahoo lurk in the current edges, striking with lightning speed. Mahi-mahi (dorado) gather around floating debris, their electric blue-green coloration marking them as one of the most beautiful fish in the Pacific.

On peak days during sailfish season (December–April), it's not uncommon to encounter and release 10–20+ sailfish in a single day on the best grounds. Average productive days see 2–6 sailfish released per trip. Even on slower days, the full-day format allows the captain to cover more ground and find active fish. Quepos consistently produces some of the world's highest sailfish encounter rates.
The vast majority of sportfishing in Quepos follows strict catch and release practices for billfish (sailfish and marlin). These magnificent fish are released after a careful, quick fight to preserve the fishery. Tuna, mahi-mahi, and wahoo are typically kept for eating — these are excellent table fish and the crew fillets them at the marina on your return.
The full-day charter allows travel to fishing grounds 20–40 miles offshore — where the water deepens over underwater structure and current breaks that concentrate big game species. These grounds are not reachable on half-day trips, which is why the full-day format consistently produces better results for offshore species.
