Half-Day Fishing Quepos
4-hour fishing charter โ similar targets in a convenient half-day format.
Light tackle fishing close to the Quepos coastline โ roosterfish, cubera snapper, and jacks in the nearshore waters.
The nearshore waters off Quepos and Manuel Antonio don't get the fame of the offshore sailfish grounds โ but among knowledgeable anglers, the inshore fishing is just as exciting. The rocky headlands, sand beaches, and current eddies within 5โ10 miles of the Quepos coast hold spectacular populations of roosterfish, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, barracuda, and African pompano.
Roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) are endemic to the eastern Pacific and have become one of the most sought-after inshore species in the world. Their distinctive comb-like dorsal spines make them instantly recognizable, but it's their behavior that makes them legendary โ they hunt in packs over sandy beaches, they chase lures across the shallows creating a boiling wake, and when hooked they fight with blistering speed and multiple acrobatic runs on light tackle.
Cubera snapper inhabit the deeper rocky structure offshore from Quepos and can reach 50+ pounds โ powerful, bulldog fish that dive for the bottom on the hook and require steady pressure and quality tackle to land. Catching a big cubera is an arm-burning workout that produces genuine satisfaction.
The inshore fishing is accessible year-round, with generally calmer sea conditions than the offshore grounds. This makes it an ideal option for guests who prefer to stay closer to shore, anglers combining fishing with other Manuel Antonio activities, or those who want an authentic inshore fishing experience without the length of a full offshore day.

For first-time anglers, inshore fishing often provides a better experience โ calmer water, more active bites, and species that are exciting to catch on lighter tackle. Roosterfish in particular are spectacular โ hard-fighting, surface-busting fish that provide thrilling action without requiring the heavy gear of offshore fishing.
The rocky headlands and reefs between Quepos and Manuel Antonio hold excellent cubera snapper and grouper. The sandy beaches and channel mouths hold roosterfish and jacks. The guide targets each area based on the tide, time of day, and recent fish reports.
Our guides use live bait, casting lures, and trolling close to structure depending on the target species. Roosterfish respond well to live baits (mullet, sardines) or artificial lures with erratic action. Snapper are best targeted with cut bait on the bottom around structure. The guide will demonstrate and help you with all techniques.
