Pacific sailfish are the species most responsible for Quepos's international reputation. During peak season (December–April), sailfish encounters on the best boats can number in the dozens on a single day — groups of 50+ fish corralling baitfish balls at the surface, creating wildlife spectacles that few angling experiences can match. IGFA-certified catch rates from Quepos-based boats regularly appear in top-10 worldwide lists.

But Quepos is far more than just sailfish. The same productive waters hold blue and black marlin of record size — fish that test the limits of both angler and equipment. Yellowfin tuna schools stretch for miles in the current breaks, with individual fish regularly exceeding 200 pounds. Wahoo — perhaps the fastest fish in the ocean — slash through the current edges at speeds exceeding 60 mph. Mahi-mahi in electric blue-green gather around floating debris in feeding aggregations.
